A Hot Albion-Lockport 'Corps of Cadre's' Ride
Wednesday, September 6th, 2023, was the hottest day I can remember ever doing a long ride! Bob D., his friend Rick from Syracuse, and I decided to try it anyway!
Last week, while gathering at Bob and Kathy's place, we decided to undertake this remote start towpath ride from Albion to Lockport. Using Bob H's Towpath maps, four of us, Bob D., Bob H., Kim, and I planned this towpath ride.
The immediate expectation was for a late-summer towpath experience. Yesterday's weather turned out to be the hottest day of this Summer -actually, it was the hottest September day in more than 5 years! Unfortunately, Bob H. and Kim decided to back out mainly in anticipation of the heat -and perhaps other reasons. The temperature peaked in the 90s on this ride!
We didn't dawdle and in fact, averaged 14.7 mph during the "moving time". My downhill speed in Lockport measured 37.5 mph with partial braking on the paved downhill.
It was a delightful surprise to receive a complimentary Root Beer Float as we arrived back at the Albion municipal parking lot, courtesy of a tour group organizer. The tour group had just completed their ride at the same time as we did. It felt like a special reward for our efforts.
