Corner to Corner, Day 13: Redruth to Looe

Reilly Gradient with the new in-frame Ortlieb bag, which transformed the handling of the bike. Outside the Penventon Park Hotel entrance. It now holds the heaviest items, relieving both rear panier bags. The bike is nearer normal, considerably less twitchy. No juddering at the front as before.

Should have stopped sooner for photo back to Redruth we had climbed out of.

Saw this at the side, stopped and followed the path.

Ale and Cake's mine engine house, located in United Downs, a hamlet near St Day. Pool in front dried out. There were several similar chimneys and buildings in the next 10 miles, and in dramatically steep rolling hills and valleys.

View of the landscape sufficiently steep for us to push our bikes, several times today.

This emphasises the acute rises and drops - compare with the photo at 12.24 - became smoother, as the landscape became less dramatic. Having said that, our route contained several drops where we thought it can't go down anymore only for it to do so. Included one close to Polperro and Looe, which I will explore to remove.

By the Philleigh Inn, which wasn't on our list of break stops as it opened after I expected us to be there. I called in here to ask for water. Google Maps names it Philleigh Way Cookery School. A group was having a short course on pastry making. I circled round and entered the kitchen where Julie was very accommodating. On the way back, I thought I recognised an American man we'd talked to in Marazon on Thursday, and whispered to him. Yes, it was him, and the two ladies beside him. In a trice and for a brief moment, I had the floor and described what had happened to the trainer. Good wishes all round and a quick departure.
